Week 2

Man Bites Dog

This was my first time viewing this film and I was completely absorbed into the story from the moment it started. I have seen films like this before that are called mockumentaries for example This Is Spinal Tap however the substance of this film is completely different as the filmmakers are following a serial killer named Ben. Ben is a narcissist with a poets mind which sometimes makes for extremely interesting moments throughout the film where you want to be disgusted but you just can't bring yourself to be instead you are fascinated. Man Bites Dog carries around the idea that society treats killers as a spectacle and it starts to show when the filmmakers Andre and Remy became accomplices to each and every crime not only through the idea of filming the events but in helping Ben get rid of the bodies. The best example of metacinema in this film is when Ben, Andre, and Remy run into another killer with a camera crew. This whole scene was one of the funniest scenes in the movie and overall this movie is an incredible satire for the way society handles serial killers and our fascination with them.

Black Mirror Episode 2 Season 2 "White Bear"

This show had one of the best twists I had scene in awhile. Metacinema was amazingly present in this episode with the people filming everything on their phones. This made the camera seem as if it were another person with a phone just watching. This film prior to the twist ending presented a social issue called the bystander effect. This is a common problem in the cellphone era. If someone is getting mugged on the sidewalk people will just walk by because to them it is not their problem and some film these things as if it were a spectacle because lets be honest everyone wants to be famous on social media. However once this episode took a turn and the walls opened up to show an audience applauding a show. The metacinema presented in this episode completely flipped in my opinion as it went from the seemingly small minded cell phone shooters to the complex park dedicated to presenting a spectacle over a person who murdered a child. We are constantly aware that she is being watched and then we are reminded that we are watching an episode within an episode.

  1. First off, this again comes in well under the 500 word minimum. Also, your first 2 sentences use too much irrelevant information. We don't need your subjective reactions, and we don't need this to be related to other films that aren't pertinent to our conversation. I want you to be more specific. Write more about what is actually happening in the film. you should be using technical language to describe, shots, editing, sequences, sound, etc. Use these technical devices to explain what the film is ultimately a commentary on.

Same goes for the 2nd paragraph. No hypothetical situations of muggings etc. Stick to the work we've been watching. Elaborate a concrete thesis as it relates objectively to the films we watch.
